2012 End of the Year Newsletter

Wow, it's the last day of the year....a time to reflect!  Our 75th year was a terrific success thanks to so many...

The Gala in February gave us the chance to say thank you to one of our most faithful fans, Doris Williams, for a lifetime of support.  Sadly, we will miss her, she rarely missed a performance. Thank you to those who donated to the playhouse in her name, she would have loved that.  She supported the playhouse in so many ways.

As for our 2012 season at the playhouse we had a wonderful beginning with outstanding performances from the casts of "Fiddler on the Roof", directed by Nathan Miles, then some lighthearted fun wth "Faith County", directed by Samantha Collins, followed closely by the very funny satire "Urinetown, the Musical" directed by Juston Harlin.

Our summer program was a total success!  The 2012 Youth Performing Arts Workshop, with 35 of the Hobbs area's finest young thespians, performed Disney's "Aladdin".  They did an unbelievably great job!  These young people are the future of our local community theater.  Thank you students and parents for this opportunity to work with you.  Hope to see a lot of you this 2013 season.  (Little Mermaid, hint, hint!)

This 2012 season (in conjunction with the New Mexico Centennial committee) also saw the revival of an old tradion...the Melodrama!  How exciting it was to watch a funfilled story, "Oil's Well That Ends Well or Rascality on the Rig", see a little Vaudeville, and sing along to some great old songs.  Thanks to Glynese Floyd, Mary Lyle, and their cast and crew for all the hard work that goes into a show like that.  It's hard to believe our state was only 25 years old when our theatre ancestors performed the Community Playhouse production!  Time flies when you're having fun!

Another thank you to Juston Harlin for the "Marooned on a Pirate Isle's" third resounding conclusion!!!!  Let's forget about how much work it is to build and strike that set and show up to help again next year anyway! (wink, wink)  Good job, everyone!

And then came "Line"  directed by Jonathan Bertshinger, our newcomer award winner from last year.  What more can be said, except...PIANOOOOOO!  Great one act and yes it was free.

And if all of this isn't enough, we concluded a beautiful season with another combined effort.  Summer Rickman and the Hobbs High School drama students were awesome as they performed the first act, "The One and Only Santa Claus" and the Community Players and Accidental Harmony filled the second act with the always crowd pleasing, "A Christmas Carol" directed by Nathan Miles.

A big thank you must go out to Michael and Chris Howell for undertaking the building of the new storage unit in the back.  It looks great and was a much needed facility.  Thanks for making us your project.  This year saw the beginning of an even bigger challenge....the new addition.  Much has been done, yet much is left to do...thanks to Pat Cleer for all his help.  We couldn't do this without you.

Last, but certainly not least, Community Players of Hobbs is looking forward to our new season.  Check our websight to see our upcoming season playlist.  We are very excited to bring you a very full calendar.
On a sadder note, we will not be performing "Bandstand" due to uncontollable circumstances.  We wish Glynese well and hope for a quick recovery.

Whew!!!! What a busy year it has been.  I say bye to 2012 and hello to 2013.  HAPPY NEW YEAR AND BE SAFE!

Your "nostalgic" president,

Sandy Goad

Don't forget, another event from 2012 is that you can now buy your tickets online!

Happy New Year everyone, and we'll see you in the 2013 Season!

"A Doll's House" is our entry into the 2013 AACTFest competition.  You can find out more about AACTFest by clicking here.

AACTFest competition takes places in three stages; state, regional, and national.  Theatre companies compete on the state level, and winning companies advance to the regional level, with regional winners advancing to the national level.  The same cast must perform at all levels (if the company advances).

The dates for the AACTFest competition are:

April 17-20, 2013, in Lafayette, LA (Regional)
June 17-23, 2013, in Carmel, IN (National)
AACTFest is a very challenging competition, but is also a very rewarding experience.  Come audition so we can show the New Mexico theatre community (and hopefully the national theatre community) what theatre in Hobbs is all about!

"The Wait" ("Line" opens November 15th!)

What is Fleming waiting for?  A ballgame?  A movie?

"Line" is free...yes, free!  This is to thank our patrons for a great 75th Anniversary Season!

Come see "Line" November 15-17 at 8 PM and November 18th at 2 PM.  ("Line" is intended for mature audiences, parental discretion is advised.)

Playhouse news update...Christmas show, Haunted House, and more!

Greetings all,

AUDITIONS FOR CHRISTMAS:  Auditions for "A Christmas Carol" will be Thursday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Western Heritage Museum. The show will be presented on Dec. 10, 11, 13, 14, with two shows on the 15th. The first feature will be Hobbs High School's drama students (directed by Summer Rickman) in a production of "The One And Only Santa Claus" by Pat Cook.  Following an intermission with carols by the a capella group "Accidental Harmony", "A Christmas Carol" directed by Nathan R. Miles will be presented. The cast of "A Christmas Carol" calls for multiple ages.

HAUNTED HOUSE: Load in for the annual Haunted House will be Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8:30 a.m. All hands and volunteers are welcome. Haunted house dates have not been finalized but they will likely be the weekend before Halloween as well as Halloween evening, which falls on a Wednesday. Contact Daniel Russell or Juston Harlin for more information. There will also be call soon for those wanting to act in the haunted house.

MELODRAMA: Thanks to everyone for making the melodrama a great success. There were large crowds most nights who walked away smiling. Thank you to the cast for a quick strike. So many people volunteered for the show — whether it was to serve soft drinks, run the house, sell tickets, work back stage, run the lights, act, etc. — it was awesome to see.

ADDITIONAL STORAGE: The new storage shed is almost done. It needs the front garage style door put on as well sealing up the ceiling/roof from leaks for final inspection. Volunteers are needed to help finish as we are in big need of the storage. Contact Chris or Shoshana Howell on how to help finish this project off.

NEW CHAIRS: The Playhouse now has 87 new gray stacking chairs. This will be used for supplemental side seating at shows when needed. Please help to keep these chairs nice by treating them the same way as our maroon chairs. Special thanks to Larry Harlin and Wally Hill who transported the new chairs to Hobbs. They were wonderful for the melodrama.

POPCORN MACHINE: For those who may have missed it, the Playhouse has its own large popcorn machine that was used during the melodrama. Thanks to Jay for storing and keeping the machine in popcorn popping condition.

2013 SEASON: No decisions yet have been made on the 2013 season. Board members and others are busy reading scripts. Thanks to all who volunteered to direct. Picking a season is one of the most critical decisions the board and the community theater can make. It can mean a successful season for audiences, for actors and directors and financially for the Playhouse. We can't make everyone 100 percent happy in this decision-making process but we appreciate everyone's efforts and understanding.

TICKETING: The use of online ticketing continues to be a great success. However, there are some potential patrons who don't have access to a computer, etc. If you come across them, please assist them by either going online for them, referring them to the house manager of the respective show, or a trained Playhouse member.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Applications are now being taken for the 2013 Carl Busch Scholarships. Deadline is Dec. 31. Application is online and open to those who will be or are attending college.

LINE:  The show "Line" by Horowitz, directed by Jonathan Bertshinger, is already in rehearsal.  Be sure to watch the trailers (very funny insight) and remember it is absolutely free, November 15,th 16th, 17th (8PM) and 18th (2PM).

Your "oh my goodness what a busy season" president,

Sandy Goad

The Greatest Opponent

What was Stephen doing before heading to wait in line?  Seems he had a very tough chess opponent that morning...

Come see "Line", November 15th, 16th, 17th (8 PM), 18th (2 PM).  http://www.communityplayersofhobbs.com

Christmas production news!

This year, we will have a special treat...in addition to Summer Rickman's students from Hobbs High returning for another Christmas performance, the Playhouse will stage a production of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".

Summer Rickman will be directing "The One and Only Santa Claus" by Pat Cook.  Students from the Hobbs High School drama classes will open the evening's entertainment with this show.  Summer has previously been seen at the Playhouse in "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" and "Steel Magnolias", and in NMJC's "Murder Room", and has directed her students in two previous Christmas productions at the Playhouse, as well as Hobbs High productions of "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Guys and Dolls".

"A Christmas Carol" will be directed by Nathan R. Miles, who earlier this season directed the hit show "Fiddler on the Roof", and has previously directed "Rabbit Hole", "All My Sons", and AACTFest 2011 Runner Up "Zoo Story".  Nathan has recently appeared in "Urinetown - The Musical" and will be seen again on the Playhouse stage in November's production of "Line".

And what Christmas production would be complete without the joyous caroling of "Accidental Harmony", Hobbs' own a capella singing group.  "Accidental Harmony" features Playhouse regulars Kristen Hester, Daniella Mendez, Ronnie Gray, Juston Harlin, Sandy Goad, and Erin Anderson.  They have been entertaining audiences in the Hobbs area since 2009, and are always an audience favorite.

Join us in December for a very Merry Christmas!

It's time for prospective directors to submit proposals for next season (yes, it's already that time).

Submission deadline is Friday, September 14th, 2012.

Submission forms can be obtained by clicking here.  Directors, please submit three (3) shows for consideration.

We've had a great 2012 season so far...let's make 2013 even better!

In case you haven't heard...

The Playhouse team won Z Feud!  Sunday, August 5th at Zia Park Casino, the Playhouse team took on the Lea County Motorcycle Toy Ride, and in a tough competition came out on top!  The team consisted of (in order from the photo) Robert Schumacher, Erin Anderson, Ronnie Gray, Kim Hill, and Shoshana Howell.

The next Z Feud is in December, and we plan to enter again!  We'd like to field a new group, in order to share the fun (believe me, Z Feud is a lot of fun).  Stay tuned here and on our other sites for details as December draws near!
